Why complication dials make the best wall art
A plain clock face gives a room the time. A complication dial gives it something closer to a drawing: rings inside rings, apertures, sub-dials, a composition balanced the way the great dial houses have balanced them for a century. On a wrist that artistry hides under a cuff; at 40 cm it finally hangs where everyone can see what the fuss was about.
That is the quiet argument for this collection over a framed print at the same price: a print is finished the moment you hang it, while a dial keeps doing its job — the hands move, the light shifts across the layered surfaces, and the piece reads differently at nine in the morning than at nine at night.
The four families map to four moods of that tradition. Grand Complications is the full orchestra — the densest, most formal composition we make. Astronomical trades density for atmosphere, all midnight blues and celestial artwork. WorldTimer is the intellectual’s dial, its city ring turning a clock into a map of a working life. Moon Phases is the classicist — the complication people have put on mantelpieces since before wristwatches existed.
Ten of the fourteen wear warm gold-tone cases because that is what this design language calls for: complication dials grew up in precious metal, and the finish keeps the formality the layouts were drawn for.
An honest note on the complications
The calendar rings, celestial displays, city rings and moon-phase apertures on these dials are decorative — faithful to the layouts that inspired them, but printed artwork rather than working mechanisms. The clock keeps real time with a silent sweeping quartz movement: hours, minutes and seconds, gliding, with no tick.
We would rather say that here, prominently, than let a photograph imply otherwise. What the large format buys you is the pleasure these dials were designed for: detail that resolves as you approach, on a canvas big enough to actually read it.

Placing a complication dial
Rule 01
Hang it where people pass
These dials work twice — silhouette from afar, detail up close. A hallway, landing, dining wall or the wall beside a desk gives both viewings; a distant wall nobody approaches wastes the artwork.

Give it formal company
Gold-tone cases agree with warm rooms: brass hardware, walnut, cream and deep greens. The steel editions suit cooler, modern spaces — the same logic as choosing a watch case metal.

Respect the 40 cm scale
Allow 2.5 m of clear wall width and fix into a stud or rated plug. Centred around 160 cm — or slightly higher on double-height walls, as with all our large formats.

Tempered glass over a detailed dial rewards soft, angled light. Avoid placing it square-on to a bright window — a few degrees off-axis keeps the detail readable all day.

Care, briefly
- One AA battery drives the sweep; replace it before it dies — large hands demand torque, and leakage is excluded from cover.
- Dry microfibre only on glass and case; never open the case to reach the dial.
- Indoors, dry rooms only — no water resistance, so bathrooms and outdoor walls are out.
- Keep the box for house moves — a 40 cm glass front deserves its original packaging.

No. Clocks Atelier is an independent design studio; every piece here is a watch-inspired decorative wall clock designed and sold by us — not manufactured, licensed or endorsed by Patek Philippe SA, and not a watch or replica of one. Model names describe the design language a dial refers to.
Do the complications actually function?
No — the calendar rings, moon-phase displays, celestial artwork and city rings are decorative, printed as part of the dial. The clock tells real time with a silent sweeping quartz movement. Every product page states this, and we repeat it here on purpose.
How big are these clocks?
Every design in the collection is 40 cm / 16 in in diameter — the same statement format as our large wall clock collection, with roughly a third more dial area than our core 35 cm pieces. Complication layouts need the canvas.
Which dial family should I start with?
For a first piece, the silver Moon Phases — classical, restrained and usually the most accessible in price. For a centrepiece, a Grand Complications dial in gold & blue or gold & green. For wall-art mood, the Astronomical family.
Are the gold clocks real gold?
No — they are premium 304L stainless steel with a warm gold-tone finish, which is exactly what a decorative object at this price should be. The finish carries the dress-watch character without the six-figure anxiety.
Is there a Nautilus-style clock in this collection?

Are the clocks silent?
Yes — silent sweeping quartz movements throughout. The seconds hand glides with no tick, so a dial this detailed can hang in a bedroom, study or meeting room without ever announcing itself.
Do any of these show the date or moon phase for real?
No. All complication displays here are decorative. If a working date wheel matters, our Submariner-inspired and GMT-inspired collections carry a real one.
What rooms suit these best?
Formal living rooms, dining rooms, studies and executive offices — anywhere with warm materials and a wall people actually pass. The gold editions in particular were made for rooms with brass, walnut and deep colours.
How do I hang a 40 cm steel clock safely?
Into a stud or a masonry plug rated well beyond the clock’s weight — never a bare plasterboard picture hook. Centre the dial around 160 cm, leave generous clear wall around it, and check level before you step back.
What warranty do they carry?
A 2-year warranty on the movement, covering manufacturing defects affecting timekeeping. Batteries and leakage, broken glass, impact, water exposure, outdoor use and unauthorised repair are excluded — full terms on the warranty page.
