An Explorer wall clock is the least decorated thing we make, and that is the entire point. No date window, no sub-dials, no rotating bezel graduations — just a high-contrast dial, a polished silver bezel and clean markers, scaled to 35 cm.

If most of our Rolex wall clock designs are about presence, this one is about legibility. It is the collection to choose when you want a clock you can actually read from the far end of a room, and a piece that will not argue with anything else on the wall.

Two dials, one decision

The collection is a straight choice between a white dial and a black one. They are not interchangeable — each suits a different wall.

Explorer Polar — white dial

The brighter and more formal of the two. A white dial keeps the clock visually light, which matters on a dark or heavily coloured wall where a black dial would disappear into the background.

Explorer Black — black dial

The graphic option. Against a pale wall a black dial becomes a strong circular silhouette, and it is the more legible of the two at long distances because the markers separate hardest from the background.

Both use the same polished silver bezel, so the metal in your room does not change the decision — only the wall colour does.

Why a plain dial reads better across a room

This is the practical case for a minimal clock, and it is worth understanding before you choose a busier design from another collection.

Legibility at distance is governed by contrast and by how much else is competing on the dial — not by diameter. A 35 cm dial with a plain background and clean markers stays comfortably readable from roughly four to five metres, and remains glanceable well beyond that. Add sub-dials, a printed outer scale or a patterned surface and the eye has to work harder at exactly the moment you want an instant answer.

That is why this collection ends up on the walls people actually use to tell the time: kitchens, home offices, hallways, studios and workshops. Decorative dials belong where you stand close to them. A plain dial belongs where you glance at it from the sofa.

The trade-off is honest: an Explorer clock is less of a conversation piece than a Daytona or a motif dial from the Oyster Perpetual range. If you want the clock to be the thing guests comment on, choose one of those instead.

Where it works

A plain dial goes where a decorative one would be wasted.

Home offices. The strongest room for the black dial. You glance at it constantly and there is no tick during calls.
Kitchens. Genuine utility. High contrast survives bright task lighting and steam-fogged glances across the room.
Hallways and landings. The polar white dial holds its own on a dark hall wall where art tends to vanish.
Large living rooms. Where a 35 cm plain dial stays readable from the far sofa and a patterned one would not.
Studios and workshops. Clean, unfussy and easy to read with your hands full.

Explorer or another Rolex wall clock?

Every collection shares the same 35 cm steel-and-glass build and silent sweeping movement. Only the dial changes.

Milgauss

The nearest neighbour. Equally restrained, but available in a full black-on-black finish that Explorer does not offer.

Oyster Perpetual

Same clean dial discipline, but in ten colours including Tiffany blue, green and red. Choose it if plain white or black feels too austere.

Datejust

Adds a fluted bezel, a date window and gold or rose gold finishes. More formal and more decorative than Explorer.

Submariner

Keeps the high-contrast legibility but adds a graduated bezel and a dive-tool character. The sportier way to get the same clarity.

Mounting and care

Before you hang it

Check the wall colour first. This is the one decision that matters here: white dial on a dark wall, black dial on a pale wall.
Stand where you will actually read it. Walk to the sofa, the desk, the far door. If the wall you have chosen is more than five metres from that spot, the black dial is the safer of the two.
Height beats framing here. Because the dial is plain, getting it level and near eye height matters more than centring it perfectly over furniture. Aim for 160 cm to the middle of the dial.
Anchor it properly. A stud or a rated wall plug. A steel-cased clock on a plasterboard picture hook will eventually tilt, and a tilted plain dial is very obvious.

Keeping it right

Indoors only. Not water resistant. Bathrooms, unheated conservatories and covered outdoor walls will affect the movement and the steel, and moisture damage is excluded from warranty cover.
Fresh alkaline AA. A weak cell is the usual cause of an uneven sweep. Battery leakage is not covered, so replace cells before they run flat.
Clean the glass, not the dial. Dry or barely damp microfibre on the front only. Do not spray cleaner at the case or open the clock.
Watch the glare. A white dial opposite a bright window will wash out at certain hours; a perpendicular wall avoids it.

Are these clocks made or endorsed by Rolex?

No. Clocks Atelier is an independent design studio and these are watch-inspired decorative wall clocks designed and sold by us. They are not manufactured, licensed, endorsed by or affiliated with Rolex SA or any watch manufacturer, and they are not watches or replicas of watches. Brand names are used descriptively, to indicate the design language a clock refers to.

How many Explorer designs are there?

Two: a polar white dial and a black dial, both with a polished silver bezel and both 35 cm. We would rather keep the range tight than pad it with near-identical variations. If you want more choice within the same restrained style, the Oyster Perpetual collection runs to ten colours.

Which should I choose, Polar or Black?

Match it to the wall, not the furniture. Polar white on a dark wall — charcoal, navy, deep green, brick or dark timber. Black on a pale wall — white, off-white or light grey. Whichever contrasts more with the wall behind it will be the easier one to read.

Does the Explorer clock have a date window?

No. Both designs display hours, minutes and seconds only, with a plain uninterrupted dial. That is part of why they stay so legible. If you want a date aperture, look at the Datejust wall clocks or the Yacht-Master range.

What size is the clock?

35 cm (13.8 in) in diameter — roughly the width of a vinyl record sleeve. That suits a wall above a console, sideboard or desk. For a larger statement piece, see our large wall clocks.

How far away can I read it from?

Comfortably from about four to five metres, and glanceable well beyond that. Because the dial is plain and high contrast, this collection holds up at distance better than our patterned or multi-scale designs.

Is the movement silent?

Yes. A silent sweeping quartz movement, so the second hand glides continuously rather than stepping once a second. No audible tick — which is why these end up in offices, bedrooms and rooms used for recording.

What warranty is included?

A 2-year warranty on the movement against manufacturing defects affecting normal timekeeping. Batteries and battery leakage, broken glass, scratches, impact, water exposure, outdoor use, incorrect installation and unauthorised repair are excluded. Full terms are on our warranty page.

Can it go in a bathroom or outside?

No. These are indoor decorative clocks and are not water resistant. Condensation and humidity affect both the movement and the steel finish, and moisture damage is excluded from warranty cover.
